The Historical Service of the Army (SHAT)

Housed in the Château since 1948, the SHAT is the record centre for the Army, the central administration of the Ministry of Defence, the common services for the three forces, and the General Secretariat of National Defence.
It is also a body in charge of historical studies and publications (particularly the Revue Historique des Armées), and the custodian of its Army's traditions; indeed, the traditions division is in charge of two museums housed at the Château: the Musée de la Symbolique Militaire, inaugurated in 1995, and Musée de Chasseurs.

Its functions also include research and studies to determine the periods of combat of the various units and Veterans' rights.
The Historical Service of the Army also works in close collaboration with the Defence History Study Centre, also housed at the Château, just like the Institute of Compared Military History and Institute of History of Contemporary Conflicts.
